Poor in New York: Peanut Butter

Peanut butter, oh peanut butter. Where do we even begin? I have a certain love hate relationship with you that began nearly a year and a half ago...

Mom rarely packed us PBJs in our lunches. We had turkey, ham, bologna - even more exotic treats like pimento cheese or egg salad.

So it's safe to say, when I moved to the city, my affair with this nutty spread was untarnished. Peanut butter was a luxury addition to apples and bananas. Not a staple to my diet.

But this ideology soon changed. Buying groceries for one is just as much of an art as buying groceries for five - particularly when your budget is about $25 for two or three weeks at a time. You learn how to shop the deals, to dig through the two-for-one sales, and slowly begin to understand what should and shouldn't be bought in mass quantities.

Peanut butter is one of those items I got used to picking up every few trips to C-Town (which is the New York version of The Food Kitty, The Sh*ty Kitty, or maybe best known as The Food Lion). Think about this: I have to pack lunch four to five days a week. That's 10 pieces of bread. Together the P and the J part of a sandwich consist of less than $5. Two loafs of wheat bread is also right around $5. So the grand total for 1.5 weeks worth of lunches? $10 bucks. Buy a $3 dollar bag of apples with a $2.50 box of Chex Mix and you're golden for nearly eight meals!

There is, of course, a problem. Sometime between July and August of this year, I had a running count of about 25 PBJ lunches in a row (excluding weekends). On that 26th day, my stomach revolted. It literally said, “No. Give me one more PBJ… just try… and I’ll make a mess out of you.”

I obeyed my stomach and splurged on a $7 salad (Argh! The cost of my meals for a week, spent in one day!).

Ahhh, but it was so worth it.

The reason I am writing about my peanut butter fixation today is because today is the first Monday in nearly a month where I’ve once again brought this classic lunch to work.

So cheers, my friends.

Ode to New York's Winter Nights

It really is such a pity

if you’ve never seen the lights of the city.

Sometimes I feel the most awake

when the sun’s gone down, and night escapes.

The shadows crawl over the walls,

and the light of daytime slowly falls.

A certain thrill attacks the night air

maybe because, you never know what’s truly there.

Walking down the darkened streets,

My heart takes on entirely new beats.

The pulse of the city drums in my ears

And quickly vanquishes any unsettling fears.

Our town’s lights flicker, twinkle, and flash

And somewhere, a late commuter does a dash.

He’s only trying to “make it” home…

The one place in the city you can almost call your own.

But our collective spirit is alive,

and while individualistic, concurrently we thrive.

There’s a web of intricate pieces and tales

And only simultaneously our story prevails.

Don’t forget that cold, deceptive night breeze.

Take in this place; take it all in please.

A city too blasé certainly dies.

So WAKE UP, and open your disenchanted eyes.

The contrasting dark night

with the harsh, bright light

may certainly bestow quite a great fright.

But for me (and for you)… oh what sheer delight.

For the city’s energy fills our weary appetite.

While this post is intended to speak to the hearts of New Yorkers, I'm sure these words could be applied to any city with that unstoppable sort of rhythm and addicting nighttime air.

First Day at HarperCollins

“So when I release the elevator doors, you guys are gonna have to run outta there. Uh… pretty quickly.”

Par-don? Did you say run?

I am now staring in horror at the man next to me, who is staring at the man next to him, who is staring at the intercom. “Um. Okay…?” He said as calmly as one can in a situation like this.

I should have seen it coming.

I should have known the day would not go as planned.

Because, let’s be honest – it never does.

(Insert flashback music.)

The morning hadn’t started out great. Bad hair day. Lost sock. One piece of bread. But despite all these little annoyances, I’d managed to make it to my new place of employment by 9AM sharp. I walked into the HarperCollins building on 53^rd, and boarded the elevator headed towards Human Resources.

It was my first day! I was going to smile, and be on time, and be triumphant! And I was going to… scrrreeetch.

I was not going to do anything for about 20 minutes.

We had made it to the 23^rd floor (or at least close to it) before our metal cage stopped. The elevator now hung in the air, silent and unmoving. Nervous glances ensued. Surely we weren’t stuck. I mean who gets stuck in an elevator on their first day of work? What are the chances? No, no… we were going to move momentarily.

“Say, is it getting a bit stuffy in here?” I thought to myself. There are seven of us. We aren’t that heavy. Why are we stuck? Are we actually stuck!? It’s been about 3 minutes. What’s the deal? Suddenly I’m very warm. I feel a little claustrophobic.

Scarf must…come…off…now.

Off my neck with you!

Are you trying to CHOKE me, scarf!?

Hum. Okay. Chill. Stare at a spot on the wall and don’t think about anything else but the spot. It’s been about 5 minutes. We’ve now pushed the alarm button, and are waiting for instructions. At least I’d taken off that freaking scarf.

I am the only girl. I am the only one under 35. I am the only one who will die on her first day!

Okay, okay maybe that’s a tad dramatic. But this thought might have crossed my mind (and if you are living in New York, you know why…). With recent elevator accidents, the last place I want to be is trapped inside of one, 23 floors up, with six slightly sweaty men.

“Okay. So it looks like the doors are jammed. I can’t open them. So we’re going to try and reset the elevator and bring it down to the first floor.”

I’m staring at spot on the wall.

No one could distract me now.

But after another 5 minutes or so passes, we simply aren’t moving. I relinquish the spot and glance at my counterparts. We are an eclectic bunch. Never the less, we all currently wear the same pinched expression.

“You know after what happened with that lady a few weeks ago…” says one man. “Ehhh.” “Oh come on.” “Heeey now.” The rest of us simultaneously grumble our disagreement with his choice of words.

Rule Number One of being stuck in an elevator: You don’t talk about being stuck in an elevator… particularly because of several unfortunate events in the not so distant past. The jerk shut his mouth, and we all went back to an uncomfortable silence.

“So. We can’t reset the elevator,” our faceless narrator says over the intercom. “Don’t worry; just hang tight. We’ve called the mechanic, and he’s on his way up there now.”

Hang tight.

Hannng tight!?

I hope no pun was intended.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to email the HR woman from my phone, apologizing for such an odd absence. She knows I’m in the building because I was buzzed up through security. She probably also believes I’m lost and have been wondering around for 20 minutes.

Dangit.

At least first impressions aren’t everything…?

Finally a thin metal bar separates the elevator doors. The mechanic then pushes them apart with his hands, revealing we are about 3 inches from the 23^rd floor. Everyone hopped out quickly, breathing a sigh of relief.

To wrap this tale up properly: The nice HR lady knew I was stuck in the elevator. My first day was an interesting dive into ebooks, and I loved seeing the behind-the-scenes process of creating this type of technology. I’ll be working in HarperCollins ebook department for the next several months, and so far everything is going well.

Although… I should mention a fire drill occurred immediately after I got settled into my area. And can you guess whose desk is the meeting spot for an emergency? Yes. You are correct. I sat down, and was suddenly surrounded by nameless employees.

Well. That, my friends, is when you just look up and smile.

Change It Up

I'm sorry... and rather exhausted.

I promise to write about the new job this weekend, but somehow time has escaped me yet again. Please note when this post was uploaded...3ish I believe? Yes, it has become apparent I may never correctly adapt to the 9 to 5 world and could possible follow a college sleep schedule for life.

Then again... that's fine with me.

And On To Something New: Last Day at Parents Magazine

I’ve been delaying the post. Procrastination at its finest.

I’m not quite sure how to wrap up the last 9 months without sounding cliché, but I’ll try to keep this as light as possible. However, you should be aware, under all these words I’m both sad and content in my final decision.

For those of you who don’t know, I will be leaving Parents magazine at 5:30pm today, and not returning tomorrow. Another job has presented itself, and while I’m very excited to begin my next adventure, I can’t help but feel as though I’m leaving behind something a little bit great.

Let’s start at the very beginning.

The first day of my internship I was in a fluster, slightly late and slightly lost (as you might remember). My confidence in the 7 train had been overestimated, as well as my ability in recalling where exactly Parents magazine’s offices were located.

I ran over to one of the Editorial Assistant’s desks once I’d finally found the correct department. “I am so sorry I’m late.” While I was less than ten minutes behind, you just don’t do that on your first day.

CJB looked up at me, matter-of-factly. “Your fine.” There was beat… a momentary pause where I couldn’t decide if she cared or not. No smile yet. I just sat standing there awkwardly.

“Let me show you where your desk is.”

And then BAM. She gave me a dazzling smile. I was reassured by this very gesture that no - she didn’t hate me, and that yes - I could do this internship.

Lucky enough, it was one of those miraculous internships that led to an even more desirable position: a job. I had put in my two weeks notice at Bloomingdale's before July was over, and the 60+ hour workweeks slowly slipped away until I was only involved in magazines.

I became a fulltime EA.

Me. Editorial Assistant for your Tablet department? No… stop it… but really, yes? Are you Sure? Maybe I shouldn’t ask if you’re sure… Yes. Yes, I want this job! Wait, what exactly is this job? Oh it doesn’t even matter at this point… just thank you for the job – ANY job!

But here's the thing... It wasn’t just any editorial job.

I feel as though my experience was a rarity in magazines – not to mention in New York City.

It should be noted: Not all companies will treat you with a respect that is not only expected, but in fact, the standard. Even as an intern, I was not just an intern. My work was relevant, and while not always enjoyable, it was important. A sense of value and appreciation is difficult to come across in any position, so to nurture even the volunteer workers is truly going above the norm.

It should also be noted: Many stumble into a job hoping to discover mentors who can guide them through the basic practices of business. My magazine was an open environment, and I was astonished to find editors bending over backwards to explain guidelines and conduct. When I asked, people answered – and not because they were under any obligation.

Finally, it should be noted: These people were enjoyable. These people were genuine. These people were mothers, fathers, wives, and husbands. These people were friends. These people watched out for one another. These people affected me in both big and little ways.

Your first real job in the business you desire to be a part of is an unforgettable experience, and I sincerely thank the staff of Parents for making my time at the magazine more than gratifying. Between toy closets, iPad testing, lineups, and tablet meetings, I saw the world of print and digital colliding from a position I couldn’t have fathomed a year ago when I moved to the city with a few bags of clothes and a mattress.

So thank you, thank you, thank you. You’ve given me the tools – now I must finish the job. Here’s to leaping into the next thing… eyes closed.

My first assignment: Call in hundreds of books from publishing houses. Well, you know how well that went... but I got by with a little help from my friends.

Toy testing. I liked this toy quite a lot.

My Lorax that guarded the cubicles. If ever we were in a pinch or stressed out, we would hug the Lorax for comfort. A few weeks ago, after the Christmas holiday, there was a lot of hugging.

And I played with cardboard boxes.

Ah! I will truly miss this! Goodbye Bagel Wednesdays. You were good to me.

Winter Weekends: Sounds and Beats

In New York's wintertime, Saturdaysare more increasingly spent indoors and a certain mellow sound encompasses theafternoon. Evening is too quick in its approach, but then again, "the citythat never sleeps" is not frightened by January's abrupt darkness.

So as I sip my coffee and read,taking in the stillness (all but forgotten during the week), I play my music ofthis particular season.

And once winter's fickle sun hasset, with dinner done...

New York wakes up for all its fun.

5 Things Not to Do on the Subway

1) Do not pee in thesubway car. In fact, it is best if you do not urinate anywhere in public.But subway cars are particularly smothering, so this is particularly cruel.

2) Do not get intodomestic disputes in the subway car. This is awkward. And I’m not talkingabout a little tiff. I’m simply asking you refrain from shouting, scratching,or yanking hair. It makes for a stressful journey home.

3) Do not pop yourgum incessantly in the subway car. Or ever.

4) Do not think wewant to hear your music in the subway car. Headphones were invented for areason. Please invest in some. Once you have bought said headphones, do try toremember that when you sing loudly we can still hear you (even though, oddly enough, you can’thear yourself). And we don’t really like it.

5) Do not think toomuch about the subway car. “I’m squished.” “That person is touching me.”“Who was sitting here last?” “Why is the train not moving?” No, no, no. Do notponder such grievances when commuting. Your wondering thoughts will inevitablybecome catalysts for a mental breakdown, or possibly lead to a cause of arrest.

The Why Blog 2011: A Year in Review

A lot happened in 2011.

It was my first full year living in New York City, and itwas the first full year the class of 2010 was officially out of college. Here’sa look at what else happened throughout 2011, with links to blog posts fromthat event. January began theyear with a Snowpocalypse of sorts through New York and much of the east coast.While overall inches of snow accumulation weren’t as high as 2010, I wasgrounded in VA for 2 extra days after Christmas. With the airports still out ofcommission, my high school friend Alice and I Chinatown bussed it up here.Though there were huge highlights to January (Martha Stewart Living internship,brunching at the Plaza, etc.), I must admit: It was a miserably cold month. Youcould walk outside and get a brain freeze… or simply slip on ice.

February wasn’tmuch better weather-wise, but the sun did grace us with his presence onoccasion. While we sat shivering in New York, Egyptian protests were beginningto heat up. Tahrir Square held millions of demonstrators, and the “ArabSpring” was set in motion.

March led to mybold statement, the term "code blue," as well as one of your favorite “Thursdays Things New Yorkers Say” posts, according to blog statistics. I was balancing time between gradschool, the magazine internship, and working at Bloomingdales while CharlieSheen seemed to be publicly losing his mind.

April was gray, gray,gray everyday. But the column “Poor in New York” was born, and my friends and Ispotted Robert De Niro filming in Astoria. I also scored the next internship atParents Magazine, increasing my magazine business network. Oh, and we had one sunny day at the end of the monththat saved all of NY from insanity.

May wasbeautiful. Whatever was irking Mother Nature in April had been vanquished andthe city was in full summer mode. While skipping spring isn’t ideal, I wassimply happy for long days and late nights. Which they were – I was working atleast 20 hours at Bloomies and 40 hours at Parents. But do youremember what else was vanquished that month? That’s right – Osama bin Landenwas assassinated May 2, 2011.

June was exceedinglybusy, but led to my first national byline at Parents Magazine. I also had anunexpected visitor in my room, and a little freak out via poem on the blog. Butyou guys didn’t seem to mind – thanks for that.

July was sunny,hot, sweaty, and marvelous. We watched fire works, visited Coney Island, andexplored the city in the summer. My childhood ended mid-month, the NBA lockoutbegan, and the News of the Worldphone hacking affair erupted.

August is mybirthday month! And was also apparently the end of the world. We had anearthquake up and down the east coast, as well as a violent hurricane only aweek later. But I was officially hired at Parents Magazine, and resigned from my retail job. Meanwhile, the US debt ceiling was on the rise, and the Londonriots were heating up across the pond.

September wasintense. My roommate was moving out, another needed to be found, loans had togo through for school, and I just couldn’t seem to find the time to sleep.Occupy Wall Street was in its infancy andFacebook “Timelines” were popping up all over the internet.

October led toone of my favorite posts about commuting, random Halloween snow, and a trip tosee what was happening on Wall Street. Everyone working on their thesis beganto sweat a little bit, and the global population reached 7 billion (22.2million of which inhabit New York City + boroughs).

November broughtholidays, which also led to a view surprises. NYC’s weather remained relativelymild, and Rockefeller Center was decorated for the annual Christmasextravaganza.

December wasquick and homework-filled. In fact, I’m so glad the holiday decorations stay upthrough the New Year because I feel as though I missed them entirely beforeChristmas. Friends came to visit our festive city, and we students finallyturned in our thesis projects!

In the Night: A New Year's Post

There’s something special about arriving in a city afterdark, particularly if you claim it as your own.

We (as in any transplant to New York) sneak away for theholidays, needing to refuel, rest, or reassess. Home always brings perspective,and it is often this viewpoint, which you know and trust, that leads toward adirection so easily lost in the city. We can hear ourselves think when thebeeping horns cease, and hours slept each night are counted on two hands verseone.

But when we (as in any “New Yorker”) are away from theincandescent orb that is Manhattan and its vibrant boroughs for long enough,there is a sense of absence or deficiency nipping in the back of our minds.Luring us, stirring us…until unexpectedly, we are hit with the original pang ofpassion that lurched us into this beautifully wrecked, yet boundless city.

As my plane looped over Brooklyn, I was comforted by thethought of knowing every house has a human, and every human has a heart. Everyheart has a desire – so try to fathom the amount of longings and aspirationsbeating indefinitely throughout our city.

Intimidating… yet inspiring.

And what of desire? This leads to change. Action.Movement. Controversy. Failure. Triumph. Desire lends to the necessities thatfulfill a different need, separate from money or sustenance. Yet maybe livinghere, you find your craving holds equal importance and value.

What is so special about arriving in a city after dark isthat the town is relaxed and slumbering. But when they wake, you’ll already bepresent, quietly amongst them. Maybe you left unnoticed; maybe your return wasunseen. But you are here now, and you choose it. Yes, we decidedly displacedVirginians, Floridians, Californians, and whomever else - we sneak into thecity at night, reposed and ready.

But for what?

You’ll have to decide.

We are back. We will do what we came to do. And oh, will wedo it well.

The Time I Pulled a Knife on Someone

“Yeah… we had fun,” I said

“Good. Did you fix your boots yet?” Mom asked. I had calledher on my walk home from the subway.

“No, mother. I’m poor.”

“You’re not that poor!”

“First – yes I am. I hate getting paid every two weeks! Andsecond – ” I swiveled around and glanced up and down the block. I had reachedone of my safety “check points.” Two people behind me, one to the right. No oneon my heels.

Check point one: PASS.

“ – and secondly, I don’t even know where to go to fix thoseboots. Everyone in Astoria’s “gotta a guy.” I gotta bagel guy, but that’s aboutit.”

“Oooh maa gosh… Britney! Fix those boots.”

“I will mother.” I said, glancing around one last time beforeheading down my street. A few feet behind me, an Unknown had snuck up. He walkedquietly and held a briefcase. But he was too close… and why hadn’t I seen himbefore?

Check point two: FAIL.

I wish I could tell you there was a method to my madness,and that I knew the Unknown was going to be problem because of facts A, B, andC, but the truth is I always go with my gut. And the gut said stop walking.

So before turning down my street, I veered to the left andleaned against the wall of a large apartment building.

“Can you believe how much we spent on those boots?” I askedmy mother, who was happily prattling on the phone. I wanted to look busy even ifI was acutely aware of the Unknown. Trying to run home would only leadsomething sketchy to my doorstep. And if any funny business happened, bigapartment buildings almost always have cameras. This was an ideal spot.

Did I mention my gut had specifically said stop walking? Iwas listening.

“Oh I know!” Mom said. “And to think…” but I didn’t hear therest of what she was saying. The 40-something year old man with a briefcase andwas passing by me… and then he stopped.

A chill went from the tips of my fingers to my feet.

He was looking at me, but just barely. It’s difficult toexplain, but the Unknown appeared to be staring right through me, like I was anapparition he’d accidently spotted but could no longer see. There was noexpression on his face, which was about three feet from my own.

So I did what any gal would do after 30 seconds ofawkwardness.

“Shoo! SHHHHOO!!” I said, flicking my free hand at him like he was an unwantedfly in summertime. He blinked repeatedly, and stepped away from me, suddenlycoherent after his trance-like state.

“Britney who are you talking to…”

The man began to walk away.

“Shush Mother. I’m kinda… having… a moment,” I said throughgritted teeth. I needed a weapon. Where were my keys? Purses are alwaysridiculously messy at the wrong moment. With one hand on the phone and anotherin my bag, I watched as the man turned to face me again, this time about 10feet away.

“Well! Well wait, what’s happening.”

“Tell ya in a sec. Just keep talking.”

"Okay hum… so I think that…” she continued, as I stoppeddigging in my purse. The Unknown was oddly standing in the middle of road,facing me again.

“What do YOU WANT!?” I screamed at him. He backed away, nottaking his eyes off me now. It was only 10pm and there was a family walkingdown an adjacent street. This was such odd behavior; I couldn’t categorize it.And I was hungry…. Really hungry. This freak was the only thing between me, andmy baked potato.

“Brit what’s happening?”

“Mom… shh. Someone followed me. Now I’m annoyed 'causeI’m starving. But I can’t go home 'cause he’ll see where I live. Stay on phone.”

“Oh maa gosh... uh, yeah. I'm not going anywhere,” the sassy Southern accent came ringing through thetelephone.

Unknown was now across the street. I stood directly on theother side, staring at him and debating my options.

He set his briefcase down.

I pulled my bag closer.

He began to dig in his coat pocket.

I began digging in my purse. And then a thought struck me –I had a knife! HA!

“What are you doing now?” Mom asked, almost whispering.

“Looking for my knife.”

“What!? You have a knife??

“Ha. Yeah. Ironically enough, I found it last night.” It had been resting, blade open, in the hall closet of my apartment. And now I had theheavy object in my hand. The weapon was probably a relic from my old roommate,but she wouldn’t mind me carrying it around for a bit.

“Well…” my mother said, “I don’t know if I’m more nervousfor you – or for that man!” she continued with a little laugh. Icouldn’t help but chuckle at her confident one-liner.

Guys, it wasn’t graceful, but it worked. With one handholding a phone I could barely open the old blade. Suddenly it popped intoplace. Striking a pose similar to Peter pan, I raised the knife in the air. Thestreet light overhead made the metal gleam.

What they don’t tell you in the movies is what to do next. Ididn’t really want to use the knife.So I waved the blade back and forth through the air, in a “just-try-tomess-with-me-because-I-might-West-Side-Story-dance-my-way-out-of-this-situation”kind of way.

This method worked surprisingly well. The Unknown DID NOTlike my knife. He pivoted around so quickly; I couldn’t help but think maybe hewanted to dance/rumble too. But still he searched for something in his coatpocket. This is the moment when my gut began speaking to me again: it said run.

I clumsily closed the knife, slicing my finger in theprocess (nube mistake), and tossed it in my pocket. The gut and I both knew if Unknownwere reaching for a gun, my knife would be no match. While he was still turned away from me, I ran down thestreet, protected from his view by two large moving trucks. Now even if he werelooking for me, it would be very difficult to see my exact whereabouts. Ipeered between the vehicles, and saw the man quickly grab his briefcase andtake off down the road. I couldn’t see much but I knew he wasn’t coming my way.

West Side Story Peter Pan had scared him! Or at leastconfused him enough to make an escape.

“Mom?”

“Yes?!?” She said.

“Hey, I’m home.”

Awkward Office Moments #1

Most of us will work in a cubicle-like setting at least oncein our lives – and for those rare souls who escape corporate Americacompletely, you’ve probably seen enough television to get a relativelyrealistic perspective of office life.

After much observation (and insights from working gals likeSteph, Ivy, and Clare) I’ve compiled a small list of some… eh… awkward momentsthat are bound to occur when you’re working 9 to 5.

The Epic Last Coffee Cup Battle:

You are tired… so tired your bones hurt! Gosh it hard to sitall day and appear alert. But with that magic black gold, anything is possible.So you run to the coffee maker and reach for a cup. At the same time, someother tired corporate-mutant-human walks into the kitchen. You recognize thedesire in their eyes…

But alas! There is only one coffee cup left! You get alittle tense and protectively block the coffee maker with your body. Guys, it's survivalof the fittest and our generation's jungle is a concrete one. You need thatbitter, murky water to survive. So what’s the next move?

You can A) Give up the cup to your coworker and just getover the whole “tired” thing …but that’s not really an option so B) Pretendlike you didn’t see them – yeah that’s right, don’t make eye contact! Of coursethen you’re kind of a jerk so C) Grab the cup and run… I mean, they mightunderstand your need… or D) Do as I do: ask the cleaningcrew where they store these miraculous little solo cups. This way, you have an endless supply of coffee AND powerfulknowledge that sets you above your competition! YES!

Oh. By the way:

I discoveredthat the extra coffee cups are very often located in a cabinet directly aboveor directly below the coffee maker.

Genius. Pure genius.

Now take this insight with you and soar in that big,coffee-loving, corporate world.

Yikes. I realize my postshave been sporadic over the last two weeks - BUT - the thesis is due December19th. After this, I promise to be a little more proficient in detailing everybit of this city.

I walk… a lot.

Every time I call my parents or friends from home, they ask,“What are you doing?” And my reply about 90% of the time is “Oh you know...walking.” Living 15 minutes from the subway has its perks (like never going to the gym) but also makes life difficult at times (like when the streets and wind eat my clothing).

Thus my shoes have taken a beating. I think I’ll have toshow you the full extent of damage my wardrobe has endured some post soon, but for nowhere is a snapshot of what these city streets have been doing to my feet.

Time for new Toms? And yes, these were once the same color.

Let It Begin... Christmas in NYC

Oh yes! It’s that time again. Christmas cheer has spreadthrough New York City as quickly as a rat overtaking an open garage can. (That simile was not meant to imply anything exceptsuddenness…)

Lights decorate skyscrapers, window displays gleam in thenight air, and carols are already blasting non-stop in retail outlets. Astoria,Queens – my humble ‘hood – even has Christmas songs playing on the streetsuntil late evening, streaming from elevated outdoor speakers. Thisextravaganza is about a week too early for my taste, but then again New Yorkhas a huge amount of prep work to accomplish the creation of a holidayexperience.

Though questions from wide-eyed tourists can be a nuisancewhile commuting (you don’t want to talk to anybody while you’re in this mindset), I absolutely love their fresh excitement. And, I would dare to say thata good majority of the “New Yorkers” in this city secretly like pointing a lostvisitor in the right direction.

So you can ask.

They don’t really mind.

Because let’s face it; at one moment in time, that was us... wondering around the city in absolute awe.

Thursday's Things New Yorkers Say

I know, I know... it's been far too long since I've written a "Thursday's Things." Honestly, these are the hardest posts to write because timing, length, and description are everything. Plus I'm finding it more and more difficult dissecting what is considered an "odd" conversation.

Yikes. Am I a jaded New Yorker??

No. I'm not, because these two moments from last week I still find humorous. Without further ado, here's "Thursday's Things New Yorker's Say," overheard by yours truly.

Double Date

“Where is Josh?” a prim looking waitress asks her coworkeron 30^th Ave. He is less prim, and maybe a little smug.

“He’s with Rach.”

“Oh,” she says.

“Know who Rach is?”

“His girlfriend I would assume?

The guy smirks. “Baby-Momma.”

“Oh. I understand…” she said nodding sympathetically.

“Ya… but I bet he’ll try and go to his girlfriend’safterwards – You know, try and hit them both up in one night.”

Prim waitress just kind of blinks.

Keep Your Magic toYourself

“Wanna see a magic trick?” a toothless man asks me in UnionSquare.

“No,” I reply matter-a-factly while flipping through amagazine.

“Come on, one magic trick??” he insists.

“I don’t have any money.”

“I wasn’t asking!” he seems offended.

“Dude…”

“One card trick?”

“Fine. One card trick. Go ahead.”

“But…you don’t have anymoney…?”

“Really? Really.Show me your magic trick for free or go find someone else who makes more than$18,000 a year,” I reply with that ironic smile my sisters hate.

“Ehh…hell! What do you dofor a living?” he says backing away and mumbling about how his salary from the street is higher. Toothless Man then begins to laugh at me… a lot.
These are always humbling moments.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner

It was cold. I was huddled in aball on stairs near 8th Street waiting for friends. That epic hunger pain wasbeginning - the one where you realized it's been hours, and hours, and only onething will conquer such gluttonous thoughts streaming through your vulnerablelittle mind.

Fast Food.

The girls arrived, with the samedetermination on their faces. We were hungry ladies, with only dollars tospare. What to do? Where to go? But of course...

NYU is located around this area,and what is something that only NYU possesses in the city? That's right -every southerner's dream:
Chick-Fil-A. Crispy, juicy chicken smothered inwhatever sauce you prefer, and placed on a golden bun with the ever necessarytwo pickles. In fact, finding a Chick-Fil-A in New York City is close to the equivalent of finding Narnia.

I know. Bold statement. But youmust understand the excitement and anxiety felt at the time. I had never beento a Chick-Fil-A north of Virginia, and the craving for those waffle fries hadbeen increasingly irrepressible.

We walked left. We walked right.This gem isn't easy to locate, you see. NYU likes to keep their little secretout of the public eye. Ahh... but we were too hungry for such games. "Where'sthe Chick-Fil-A!?" Ivy finally asked a wondering student. There wasdesperation in our eyes; a gleam on our skin. The girl showed us mercy.

"Up the street, to theright."

These words were not directions tolive by (Up the street? To where - Harlem?) but they gave us hope. And that wasall we needed to fulfill our mission. I could see us in slow-motion. Dodgingpeople, glancing around nervously, excited but solemn. Until The ChickenSandwich was in our ambitious grasps, we could not dare to dream... not if ourdreams could so easily be dashed.

(Cue dramatic music)

Ah! The entrance. Now all we had todo was walk past the guards... eh, I mean RAs. Nonchalantly, we gave our bestcollege faces, and hooked a quick right into the cafeteria. It's entirelypossible you could be homeless and walk into the student union, but weweren't sure of the rules and now was not the time to ask.

Glowing lights beckoned,pronouncing to us "The chicken from GOD is here for you!" I'm noteven a die hard Chick-Fil-A fan, but there will always be something magicalabout finding places unknown. Need I mention my meal was under $5?

And that was the best fast food I've devoured since moving to New York. Except for maybe that one late-night Taco Bell excursion in Queens...

The "Oh Crap!" Moment

I was sitting at my kitchen table

feeling very ready and very capable.

An important task needed to be done,

though it’s never enjoyable or ever fun.

It was morning time… or, well maybe afternoon.

So I was relaxing, and then going into the city soon.

My poverty breakfast was quickly made;

two pieces of bread – sans the marmalade.

But I had a strong cup of coffee to drink.

And now I just had to access my bank.

Because it’s time to pay the bills, you see,

For internet, for lights (but not the TV!)

And as I spread my papers around

And lined up the piles into a little mound,

This familiar sense came over me,

like I’d seen this done previously.

And as I organized the bills one after another,

A thought struck me – Oh crap! I’m my mother!

(Editor’s note: It is not at all crappy to be my mother. It is not at all crappy to be like my mother. Children just tend to have these "Oh crap!" moments. And Mother, if you’re reading this, don’t pretend you haven’t had these thoughts about Grandmother.)

Yesterday was a great day.

I enjoyed a free cupcake from Crumbs Bakery, and thendined on $1 fries from Pomme Frites in the East Village. Last weekend, Igrabbed a $15 brunch with friends that included two Bloody Marys, and in thenear future I’ll be partaking in a “wine night.” What do all of these thingshave in common, you ask? Besides food (oh how I love food), all of theseactivities involve some sort of deal. So without further ado: Here are five great ways to save a buck or two whileliving in New York City… or really anywhere.

1) Do Your Research

“Hey Brit, let’s get some drinks at so-and-so!”

I then Google search so-and-so restaurant. $17 drinks andno happy hour?

“Hey girl – Let’s not.”

Okay, sometimes you’re going to splurge. But on theaverage, I don’t like paying more than $7 for my drinks - and even then Icringe a little. So here’s a tip: If you haven’t heard of a restaurant or bar,look up the menu first. You will be shockedat some places prices, particularly in cities like New York, DC, LA, etc. UseYelp, Urbanspoon, and restaurant’s websites to explore just how much you mightbe spending before you agree to a paycheckthrashing.

2) Know Your Apps

While research is great, more often than not you’re goingto find savings on the go. We don’t usually think about a way to save money until we realize we’re aboutto spend money. Hence, the smartphone. But a cellular isn’t so clever without a quick-thinking user. Below area few apps that might just make you brilliant:

Foursquare - “Check in” to a place youvisit on this website, and sometimes you will find a discount waiting.

Scoutmob - This relatively new app isonly in the large cities as of yet, but its scrolling list of deals for 50-100%off got me my free fries this evening. And you don’t have to buy the deals!Plus you can send pictures of yourself looking like a mobster with a mustacheto friends. Get it? Scoutmob. Loveit.

Yelp - As mentioned before, apps likeYelp will help give you a price range of your favorite restaurants. Living Social and Groupon are two other coupon-like apps,usually with a purchase price for a deal that can be used over a certain periodof time.

So the next time you don’t know where to go with a friendfor dinner, scroll through your apps and find the best deal. Ta da! Your meal isserved.

3) “Follow” Companies You “Like”

“Following” companies on Twitter or “Liking” organizationson Facebook can definitely lead to a few perks. For example, yesterday I got afree cupcake because I donated a children’s book to Crumbs Bakery. I originallylearned about this event on Twitter from a coworker, but then forgot thedetails. So I looked the bakery up on Facebook and verified the event. Thankyou social media!

My free cupcake, which gave me quite the sugar high.

To avoid getting overly inundated with advertisement-likemessages on your Facebook and Twitter, make sure you only follow the companiesyou really enjoy or pages that you truly find useful.

4) Know the Turf

When you find a deal, keep it in mind for life! Explorethe city and learn the cheap options in each neighborhood. This way, whenyou’re out and about, you won’t accidently spend your entire paycheck on aburger and fries. Make note of your finds mentally, or type them into yourphone. Google Maps even let’s you drop “pins” on its virtual map so you canremember the places you’ve visited in the past.

5) Use Your Friends…

… for fun. Don’t forget to throw a wine night, holidaysoirée, or birthday bash at someone’s apartment. Bars are great, but no matterwhere you go, the spending quickly adds up. BYOB and potluck dinners arefabulous money savers and can be more fun than a night out on the town. Why youask? Because there’s no long trip home at 2am.

Dirty Days: Laundry in NYC

So you're probably going to find thisblog post a little discussing, or possibly repulsive based on your own cleaninghabits. But maybe... Just maybe... You can relate?

I hate doing laundry. Always have, always will. This choreis the biggest time suck I can think of and it's typically a solitary task,meaning us naturally extroverted creatures feel as though we must be missingout on something better than ourcurrent state of sad affairs.

But that’s not even the worse part! No, the mostunfortunate thing about washing your clothes is that the feeling of having"done" your laundry last no more than 12 hours. As soon as the day isdone, another freaking shirt is backin the hamper!

Bah! It’s just bad.

And the thing is, this task actually gets even lessenjoyable in the city. I simply CANNOT carry that bag of clothes down twoflights of stairs and up two city blocks without muttering a curse word.

So I wait to do my laundry.

And then, I wait a little more…

The pile gets a bit out of control,

and I hide the basket behind the closet door.

Some clothes seem to be missing.

I contemplate doing a crucial load.

Oh but then there’s a rainstorm.

So I can’t walk my clothes up the road!

Well, I’ll just try for the weekend.

Oh but I’m out of town!

How unfortunate for me.

Though you wouldn’t see my frown…

And then suddenly out of nowhere, I’ll realize the lasttime I did my laundry was…

THREE MONTHS AGO!

I know, I know… I shouldn’t have enough clothes to last methree months. BUT I DO! So I’m stickingto my ways suckers! It just comes down to this: You can take the girl out of college, but you can’ttake the college out of the girl.

Please though, for the love of plastic hangers, if you have asolution to clothing storage space in the city - LET ME KNOW.

Always counting quarters and waiting.

Oh No, Oh Snow

I was snuggled warmly in bed.

We’d all stayed up late into the AM the night before. Ivyand I had gone to Brooklyn for a Halloween soirée and then crashed at her placein Harlem. Our plan that morning was to sleep in like the lazy bums we never getto be, walk around the park, and then start…. eh, finish the dreaded thesis.

It was your typical 20-something-grad-student-in-New-YorkSaturday.

Alas, as I rolled out of bed, something falling from the skycaught my eye. No, it couldn’t be… not yet. Surely not yet.

But it was! It was SNOW. Big fat flakes fell gracefully intothe ally, mocking me with their dace-like tumble onto the street.

Didn’t these hateful ice bombs realize they were early!? Mymind kept screaming the words “October” over and over again.

“Ivy… Ivy wake up.”

“What, what., what…”

“Snow. Snow… It’s snowing. It’s snowing.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Snow?!” she said sitting straight up and then quicklywalking towards the window. We stood there for about two seconds, looked at each other,and then screamed like we were cued for a movie:

“NOOOOOOO!!!!”

Don’t get me wrong. I used to love snow and I still enjoy iton occasion. The city is never quieter or cleaner in the midst of a blizzard,and who doesn’t like a little white Christmas?

But. It’s October. Walking 15 minutes from the subway in icyslush with holey shoes, tights, and a dress is… well, I’m whining and I knowit, but it was freaking miserable! Ivy let me barrow some winter necessities(thank you!), and yet I still resembled a chattering, blue fool by the time Ireached my apartment.

Last winter in New York was unbearable. In fact, we don’t talk about it because it wasslightly scarring. Every other day in January we had ice storms that wouldknock you down on the street, and wind that would cut through your coat -especially near the river. Subways got stuck for hours and my constant walk,walk, walking turned into a routine worth repressing.

Winter wonderland, you are reluctantly welcome back in December.Please stay away until then. You must let we New Yorkers get mentally prepared... or given time to evacuate.

Mail Bag

Yesterday I got a letter! A big thanks to Anne in Virginia for the encouraging words and actually sending me a hand-written note about my article. That’s a big deal… and it made my night.

If I haven’t already bothered you about it - my first national print byline came out in the November issue of Parents Magazine. Whoop whoop! I helped write the Best Toy Guide of 2011, and yes, we did get to play with the merchandise throughout the summer. (PS - Some of those games for 8 years+ are actually quite difficult… especially before coffee. Should I be worried my own children will be smarter than me at 8!? Eh... I was never very good with numbers.)

Turns out she was trying to be helpful by giving me a little cash for some tickets home. Alas, she pushed the wrong button and BAM - stole my moola!

My Creepy Neighbor

So my neighbor is a clown. I have only seen him in makeup once. His face was painted, and he wore a wife-beater while his tiny black poodle growled at people strolling by.

Yeah. That was enough for me.

Unfortunately my creepy clown neighbor likes Halloween. It seems to be the holiday he most relates to, thus the rest of the block must put up with frightening exhibits of oddness... like this new addition to our hood:

Meet Evil Clown Pirate. His ship is a fire hydrant, and his prey are any who exhibit fear. Walk tall Astorians! Do not be fooled. He is only a stuffed mannequin.

But do beware...

When you pass Evil Clown Pirate, resist from exhibiting any form of emotion. With a quick glance to the left, you will see the real evil clown, peeking out from behind his curtains, looking for exactly such a response.

A Trip to Occupy Wall Street

The whole world’swatching.

I exited the Cortland Street subway station, and was almostimmediately sucked into a mob of people. Race, religion, political party… youname it. And they were walking right past me, carrying signs or chantingphrases of disapproval. The Occupy Wall Street protests were in full swing thatbreezy night as the moon, the skyscrapers, and apparently the “whole world”watched.

Well. Might as well join them.

Two of my friends and I quickened our pace to keep up withthe crowd. Journalists intermingled amongst what could have been businessmenand women to homeless hippies. A person walked by with a sign for the TeaParty, while an “End the War” poster grazed my shoulder. It was cramped and thepolice began closing in, urging participants towards a nearby sidewalk.

All night, all day –Occupy Wall Street!

Now I can’t tell you what the #Occupy movement is going todo… if it’s going to do anything. Butit has certainly gotten people talking. Blogs are a buzz, news websites havestepped up coverage, and senators are making statements. So then again, Isuppose that’s something.

A few weeks ago, the same could not be said. News stations hadattempted to avoid coverage of these events. After all, who are they owned by?Yes, very large and powerful media conglomerates, which is exactly what’s beingattacked. And politicians wrote off the grassroots movement as a war betweenclasses. But slowly, and then quite surely, downtown Manhattan turned into aconstant parade of voices.

And they are angry.

I suppose what fascinates me most is not the politicalcause, or even the surprising numbers of participants; it’s the people themselves. Their diversity andpassions are so extreme, so bipolar! Yet they all seem to have something tosay. The general unrest from a brutal economic summer was so prevalent, it wasalmost tangible… and now somethinghas sparked. A small explosion of ideals and philosophy has led to hundreds ofcities starting their own movements, which now extend to every continent exceptAntarctica.

So what is this going to achieve? I couldn’t tell you. Arethere radicals from both parties surrounded by moderates and independentsprotesting? From what I saw, yes. Should people be allowed to protest? I wouldcertainly hope so (Democracy?). Can my generation stop being called apathetic?To soon to tell… or maybe I don’t care about the answer (ba dom - ching!). Willthis end relatively peacefully? Fingers crossed. Do people hate this movement? Yes, and they should be allowed to. Dopeople love this movement? Yes, and they should be allowed to.

Because thank God, above all else, we are allowed to speakand think and act for ourselves. Now someone cue “Proud to be An American…”

Help Me With My Thesis

Can you believe it's that time again? Yes. I am writing another (and let's pray my last) thesis paper. To give you a little history, here is my statement: "What iPad business modelsare working best to create profitable magazines, and what obstacles still limitthis current style of publication?"

I will be analyzing the history of the iPad, studying its turbulent relationship with the publishing world, and doing a case study of three national magazines using tablet technology.

This is where I need your help. I'm curious about why the consumer (aka you and me) is interested in e-technolgy, and more specifically, the iPad.

There are a few fashion and lifestyle trends I’ve noticedwhen walking the streets of NYC. Whether it’s a person strutting their stuff inSoho, random subway commuters, or an Astorian hipster, people definitely try toachieve a certain look. Fashion, food, books, movies and more are constantly influx. So here’s a list of a few things I’ve noticed trending around town.

1) Divine Desserts - Move over cupcakes andmini-cupcakes. There are two new desserts littering New York’s city streets.First the cake pop. Basic in appearance, these yummy snacks are essentiallypieces of cake dipped in flavored icing. Starbucks carries some of my favoritetypes, with super moist cake dipped in chocolate and espresso. The seconddessert trend is the macaron (which I’m finding online as spelled both“macaron” and “macaroon”). These treats are made from egg whites, lots ofsugar, and usually some form of almond powder. They look like two puffy cookiesheld together with jam or cream.

2) Spot On! - I’ve been seeing polka dots all over town.Black and white, blue and tan; you name it. Dare I say spots are trying totrump recent winning trends, like the stripe? No, no… I don’t know about that,you J Crew lovers. But it’s there – so watch out!

3) Loose Braids - This is one of those trends I wish I couldemulate, but alas, braids and me never really work. I’ve been seeing girls dothis loosey-goosey look all September, and I think I’m kind of jealous. Summer’sparallel trend: The top bun.

4) Website Updates - Facebook isn’t the only site getting afacelift. Pandora was just restructured, loosing the 40-hour listening limitper month. Blogger also streamlined its homepage, giving a more modern look totheir site, and Pinterest received a few moderate changes. I feel like I’mforgetting one… Oh yes. There’s also Google+.

5) Tablet Debates - Step aside iPad, if only for a season orso. Amazon has just released the new Kindle Fire at the shockingly low rate of$199. This took the market by storm last week, but what of the Nook Color 2expected to be released this autumn? I’d say one trend for now is “tabletconsumer confusion.”

Things of note: jade green dresses, animal print, organicburger joints, Occupy Wall Street protest, iPhone 5 release (if it’sreleased…), debit cards that charge you, Hulu Ad Swap, book clubs.

I downloaded the new “Timeline” feature through Facebook last night. Now before you go stalking my page, if you don’t currently have the Timeline feature, you won’t be able to see anything new. Right now, it’s currently in developer mode, meaning you kind of have to hack…er, um… mess with Facebook
a little bit.

And believe me, if Facebook minded, they wouldn’t let you.

Interview with Jeremiah Brent

I was almost running late.

The press event began at 11am, and it was currently 10:15. Technically I was leaving right on time - plenty of time to grab a coffee and catch a ride downtown. But then… there’s the subway.

How unfortunate that all trains going into the city were running express, and “because of construction” were only leaving from one stop. Not my stop.

Sigh. As is life.

Somehow I managed to get to the event by 11:10 (albeit, a little out of breath), giving me plenty of time to wonder the Sherwin-Williams and Fisher-Price displays. Free, delicious looking munchies lined several tables, and a large canister of coffee sat proudly in the middle, as through all the food bowed down to him.

Well, I certainly did.

Grabbing a hot cup, I turned around to face more display tables. It was always slightly awkward at these press events, not knowing anyone, with most attendants being long-term editors from other magazines. Still, I can always play a part. And I was wearing my Jimmy Choos. Don’t judge – it helps. And high heels are expected at these things, particularly when you are about to hear from celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe.

She was promoting a new online tool called Room to Bloom. Several PR agents had walked me around, highlighting features about the product and asking how it would best work for my audience.

Rachel Zoe then appeared, with new assistant Jeremiah Brent in tow. They gave information, answered a few questions, and talked about Rachel’s new baby. I’m not one to be star-struck, but it did feel surreal staring into the face of a woman I watched on TV.

How crazy?
I suppose I was part of “the press.”

Expecting to watch a short presentation on Room to Bloom, and then head back to work, I was surprised when a friendly PR agent I’d been talking with earlier approached me. “Would you like to try and get an interview with Jeremiah?” she said quietly as the presentation began.

I nearly choked. I didn’t have any questions! I really wasn’t prepared! I just ate a sandwich! Was there anything in my teeth!?

“Oh, yes. Definitely,” the calm, collected outer Britney replied.

Inner Britney was a little more frantic. I walked down a hallway and passed a man offering champagne. “Oh no thanks,” said a woman in front of me. “I’m trying to stay slim!” Another lady eyed the sparkling glasses, ’Thank you but no. I’ve got a long day ahead of me.”

Champagne man looked me as I unceremoniously grabbed a cup. “I’m going to need this…” I mumbled with a small smile. “Get it girl!” he replied in out right laughter.

Next I scribbled down a few quick notes, trying to gather enough questions for about a five-minute interview. My phone was fine on battery, and I said a quick “thank you!” prayer as I remembered my newish iPhone has a microphone. The whole interview could be recorded and I could focus on not looking a fool.

“Alright so…” I said to the one and only, Jeremiah.

“What’s up,” he smiled.

“How are you doing today? Are you stressed with Fashion Week?”

“I’m good! It’s been a lot... ”

"We Can Fly, We Can Fly"

There was a piece of garbage that rolled down the steps of the subway with me.

The red, plastic slip of paper was moving faster than I was… Falling – no, flying past groups of commuters. If you’ve ever visited the city, you may have noticed strange crosswinds that catch your wrappers and your napkins and your hair (or unfortunately your dress) at off-beat moments throughout the day. The gusts come from seemingly nowhere; just air trapped inside the grid of the city trying to escape.

I stepped onto a subway train.

The man across from me was asleep. The woman next to me was reading. Two men stood near the door, discussing a business proposal. And to my left… No. It couldn’t be. But it was. My piece of red trash friend was resting next me, tired of riding the breeze.

I laughed to myself. Small city.

As I exited the underground and stepped into the sun, police cars were lining up everywhere. Something was happening. But not in the chaotic sort of way. You can feel it in the air when something unexpected happens, and this? This was controlled chaos.

“On the sidewalk miss!” a cop yelled at me.

I quickly moved away from the road and tripped over my other foot. Wait, that wasn’t my foot. Ah! My best friend, Red Trash, was attached to my shoe! I blatantly smiled at the piece of paper.

Yes, I smiled at paper. We seemed to have a connection.

Quicker than I imagined, another blast of wind swept through the city. Red Trash unlatched himself from my shoe and flew up, up, up into the gray sky. He floated happily towards the East River, abandoning me for a carefree trip through town. "What a sense of adventure," I thought wistfully.

Is it odd that I was jealous of Mr. Red Trash?
And missed him a little bit?

I saw the President today. He’s been visiting New York for the United Nations conference. And this afternoon, I popped inside of Google’s headquarters to discuss tablet technology for work.

But for some reason, I felt compelled to tell you about that red piece of paper. I think you would have enjoyed him as much as I did. And I think, when he left for his next adventure, you would have missed him just as much too.

Fall: The Time to Play Catch... Up

I’ve been bad. There is so much to fill you in on, and moments are slipping away faster than I can type them up. By the way, where did August go? Now September is disappearing as quickly as the changing sun. And you know what that means…

Alright, okay…

For any New Yorker reading the blog, I won’t say the dreaded “w” word.
Just for you.

Fall embraced the city almost over night, and school has started up once again. With that comes Pumpkin Spice lattes, Saturday study days, Sunday football, and of course, the late-night crunch. My college roommates will love this statistic I’m about to drop: Average hours slept per night last week: 4.7. Hours spelt on Sunday night: 2.5. Goal for hours to sleep per night this week? Eh…. That’s why you love me!

But here’s the reason I know it’s time for a blog post: I’ve been finding napkins in my pockets and scraps of paper in my purses with hints written from my creative self, addressed to my frazzled self.

Most of memos read something like, “Need 2 blog bout tennis,” or “Dont forgt: park pic.” I couldn’t even tell you what my coding means for half of these notes. But an even bigger problem? I couldn’t even tell you when I’m actually going to sit down and write out these entries.

So. Basically, I’m asking you to bear with me. Once my loans have gone through and my new roommate is settled and classes calm down and my thesis is well underway and people stop being so dang enjoyable, I promise, I promise, I promise to give you some fabulous blog posts.

But for now, enjoy this embarrassing picture snapped right before the hurricane. Happy Tuesday! Keep "holding on" until the weekend!

4) Do dishes. This item holds the same equally unimportant value as Item #1.
5) Order one more book for school.
6) Remind oneself repeatedly that, in fact, school starts tomorrow.
7) Buy peanut butter. This Item trumps all other Items, with the exception of #2.
8) Upload pictures to Facebook. This Item is time-sensitive due to your parents’ uncanny Facebook skills. In fact, your pictures are already old news.
9) Consider that possibility of maybe thinking about the idea of doing laundry.

I looked up at my ceiling.

A large puckered, dark circle was right above my head. The last storm had successfully damaged my roof, and the impending hurricane was probably going to finish it off.

Time to leave.

My roommate was in VA, so I knew I wasn't getting stuck in our leaky apartment alone. The Comey family in Connecticut are life-long friends that had a bed to spare, so I gladly accepted their invitation for a weekend in Westport. My rolling suitcase was packed at 1am last night, and an alarm was set for 6:15.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

Yep, definitely time to leave. Now I just needed to get there before the train system shut down at noon...

No bread left in Astoria.

This pot is almost comical. I also wrapped the couch and TV in shower curtains since the chances of damages are... quite high.

Going into the city was eerily quiet.

Grand Central was deserted when I first arrived. Not a soul was on 42nd street. And I thought I'd have to beat the crowds for a ticket out... turns out New Yorkers don't mess with hurricanes.

New York Hurricane Irene Part 1: We Wait

New York is prepared.

There’s an eerie sort of silence on the streets this afternoon. As I ate my sandwich in some random corporate park with a waterfall, I noticed the absence of people… the absence of rush. I was noticing a cliché “calm before the storm.”

Of course, two places are as frazzled as ever. Duane Read was full of lunch break employees grabbing water, batteries, and flashlights. Big bags of supplies were being pulled out of the store, and I couldn’t help but think drugstore owners must be squealing in delight over the impending hurricane.

“Any flashlights left?” one woman asked.
“No. Ha. Good luck,” a disgruntle employee replied.

The second overwhelmed space is virtual. Twitter has been erupting with constant news updates, Bloomberg tweets, and friendly advice for @bittfitz. In my office people are doing the normal 9-5 thing. But everyone is also texting under the table, tweeting behind open emails, and blatantly calling family members.

No one is sure what to do.

I’m under the impression that New York is slightly overreacting. Maybe it's the Virginian in me, but I only find this type of storm exciting or annoying. Still the images from Katrina are fresh in the minds of most and the general consesus is "better safe that sorry." This hurricane won’t be nearly the same category by the time it reaches our city, but the truth is, when something big happens in New York, it’s always BIG.

The highs are high and the lows are low, my friends.

Here is what we do know:

1) The MTA is closing all subway, bus, and Metro North

services starting at 12pm Saturday 27th.

2) Staten Island ferry service will be suspended

if winds reach over 46mph.

3) Bridges will be closed if winds reach over 60mph.

4) The Rockaways in Queens are being fully evacuated due

to isolation risks with bridge closures.

5) Zone A residents are being asked to evacuate ASAP. This includes

Coney Island, Manhattan Beach, and some costal areas of Brooklyn,

Manhattan, and Queens. Here is a map with all the zones highlighted.

Maybe we’re going to have the storm of a lifetime. Maybe we'll laugh about this Monday. But for now…

Poor in New York: How to Make A Hardboiled Egg

Beep beep beep. Good morning New York! You are awake! You are ready to take on the day! You have personality and excitement and you have…

No. Food.

Dangit.

While a bohemian lifestyle is often celebrated, the practicality of running on high energy levels around the city with a bum breakfast is zero to none. Eating half a piece of bread while downing a cup of coffee only gives me the shakes, and I usually don’t have milk in the fridge for a bowl (or mug) of cereal. So what’s a commuter to do?

Here’s the basic trick to survival: plan ahead, my weary ones. Listed below are some examples of my favorite shortcut meals.

1) A bagel or ½ bagel is the epitome of a complex carb. Use this meal when you expect to be doing intern errands or running around the city. Prep time is about a minute, and the cost is low. Add peanut butter over a raisin bagel for an extra iron boost. Saver secret: If you love yourself some real, Brooklyn bagels – buy a dozen and freeze them. The bread will last for much longer and you’ll safe money in the long run.

2) Trail mix. ‘Nuff said. I also like the summery combination of fruit and a Yogurt Nutri-Grain bar. Why Nutri-Grain you ask? They have a decent amount of iron (which will keep your energy high) and they’re always on a 2 for 1 sale at C-Town.

3) My brilliant roommate Anna taught me this little time-saver for morning meals. So you want something a little more filling, but cooking and cleaning the pan come AM time just doesn’t happen. Not to fear! The incredible edible hard-boiled egg is here.

On Sunday night, grab a small pot. Place 3 to 4 eggs in the pot and then fill it with water until the eggs are fully covered and sitting about an inch deep. Next, place the pot on the stove, throw in a dash of salt, and begin to boil the eggs. (For all you non-cookers out there, that means put the stove on HIGH.)

Once the water is at a full boil, remove the pot from the heat and set it on an unused burner (aka not in direct heat). The general consensus is eggs should rest in the hot water for 13-15 minutes. If the yolk is green when you eat the egg, it isn’t bad but just slightly overcooked.

Now wrap those suckers up and put them in the fridge. Come Monday morning, you’ll have a filling, protein-packed meal and all you’ll need to do is crack ‘em open. The salt you used when boiling your water should help when peeling off the shells.

Eat the eggs straight for a refreshing, chilled meal. Or if you prefer them warm, set the eggs in a bowl and mash them up with a bit of butter, salt, and pepper. Stick in the microwave for 20-30 seconds and voila!

You are now a hardboiled egg master. I dub thee poor, yet happy... and full.

Let's face it: New York is freaking expensive. Luckily, deals are hiding within each neighborhood and alleyway. My first year in the city was rife with experience, and searching for savings has quickly become routine. Turns out being "poor in New York" is far from impossible.

For "The Student:" Grocery List

1) Pasta, sauce, and cheese is about $5 for a meal that will keep on giving.
2) A bag of apples and a few bananas combined should be $3-4.
3) A crate of eggs and three potatoes should be between $4-5.
4) PBJ sandwiches. Duh. And get creative by adding honey or bananas.
5) Sushi from a deli is usually between $4-5. A bag of edamame is even cheaper.

For "The Twenty-Something:" Drinks
1) Dounkin Donuts coffee is the better deal, but you can still get Starbucks signature brew “Pike Place” without going over $2.
2) By now you should know: PBR at Welcome to the Johnsons is $3, Crocodile Lounge’s happy hour is 12pm till 7pm, which mean you get Yuengling and free pizza for $3, and everything at Rudy’s is cheap.

3) McSorley’s Old Ale Hous e only serves two drinks:

“dark or light.” And it’s all $5.
4) Bloomingdale’s signature restaurant, 40 Carrots, serves a creamy

Raspberry Cloud Smoothie for $5.
5) Trader Joe’s Wine Shop will not disappoint. Look out for Three Buck Chuck.

For "The Foodie:" Restaurants
1) A Brooklyn Bagel with plain cream cheese and small coffee hovers right around the $5 mark. And they are the best bagels in town.
2) Jin is a Japanese restaurant in the Lower East Side with a $3 happy hour menu where everything is – you guessed it – three bucks.

That includes sushi, sides, and drinks.

3) Prosperity Dumpling has food on the menu for as cheap as $1. Get 4-5 dumplings and a drink for under $2.
4) 2 Bros Pizza has a $1 a slice deal, and if you really want to splurge, they offer two slices and a soda for $2.75. Hey big spender!
5) You can usually get a gyro or falafel on the side of the road for about $5, but its best to ask the price, particularly in midtown.

I recently got hooked on Gnocchi in my uber Greek neighborhood. $1.69 for the pasta (made from potato), and then add some butter and

cheese for a delicious dinner.
